Hanja

Learning Korean has been one of my life’s big challenges. I am still nowhere near as fluent as I would like to be, but the process has been a lot of fun so far. I decided today to share some of the materials and tools I have been using in this journey.

Since nearly two-thirds of Korean words are of Chinese origin, it should come as no surprise that a basic understanding of several hundred Chinese characters and their meanings can dramatically improve your Korean vocabulary. It is to that end that I am learning Hanja, the Korean name for the traditional Chinese characters with Korean pronunciations. I am in the process of generating a study guide for some of the most common Hanja characters and various vocabulary words that are associated with them. Check it out here:

I am using VoodooPad 5, which is personal wiki software for the Mac. I write each page in plain text Markdown using the UTF-8 character encoding. On export, VoodooPad handles the conversion of Markdown to HTML and adds a custom stylesheet. I also got a little help from Ian Beck’s VP5 Web Export Template.

If you enjoy using the study guide, please buy a copy of Miho Choo’s and William O’Grady’s Handbook of Korean Vocabulary. It is an awesome resource and is one of my primary sources for the vocabulary lists.
